1. Ian Malcolm- For those of you who have watched or read Jurassic Park, Dr. Ian Malcom will be very familiar. And for those who have forgotten, let me refresh your memory.
Ian Malcom is a mathematician who specializes in Chaos Theory. Don't ask me to explain about Chaos theory though because I really don't understand it. Anyway, among the consultants hired by InGen for the Jurassic park project, Ian Malcolm is the first one to say that the idea will not work.
Though the movie tells the story [both Jurassic Park and the Lost World] differently, Ian Malcolm's character has always been the weakest link in the story. Though he is one of the most intriguing, memorable and interesting character in the book, Malcolm has a knack for attracting the [of all creatures] tyrannosauros rex. In both books, Malcolm was injured and almost to the point of dying.
If I could tell Micheal Chrichton one thing about both books, I would tell him to make Malcolm's character less pessimistic and pathetic and at least lessen his injuries a bit because he seemed to be the only 'really' rational person in the story.
He was portrayed by Jeff Goldblaum in both movies.
Aian's rating: I'll give him 4 stars for being sensible, 2 for being so pessimistic, and five because we both love black.
2. Luna Lovegood- So, who doesn't know her? She's the weird Ravenclaw girl first inrtoduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. You know, the one with the butterbeer cork necklace and the raddish earrings?
Luna's character is the light of the HP5. She's sweet, innocent, and sensible. Her character has the knack for saying things that other people don't normally say. What I like about her character is that, she is strong in a different sort fo way, confident and she does not mind what others say about her.
She has always been considered a 'loony' by the other students but she never seemed to care. She has always been true to herself and she never gives in to the pressure of conforming to the rest of the school.
Among the characters in the HP series, Luna is the only one who's character was totally retained and never altered in a bit in the movies. In the movie, Luna is equally appealing, sweet, intriguing, and really really memorable as a character.
The character of Luna was portrayed by Evanna Lynch in the HP5 movie. Among the cast in the movie, only Evanna seemed to fit her character to a T that when you see her even in interviews you would think that she is still Luna being interviewed by the Daily Prophet. She is the real Luna Lovegood.
Aian's rating: Simply the best.
3. Hermione Granger -
Her famous, "stop, stop, you might hurt somebody's eyes on that besides you're saying it the wrong way..." line in the first movie endeared Emma Watson [the actress who portrayed Hermione] to the audience. Hermione, aside from being clever, has always been the pacifier, the one with cool head tasked to make Harry and Ron see reason. Without Hermione [and of course Ron], Harry will never be able to survive everything that he has to go through.
In all of Harry's ordeal, it has always been Hermione [aside from Dumbledore of course] who gives him real help. This is quite evident especially in the last four books of the HP series. Sure, Ron does help Harry but Ron is somewhat like Harry also and without Hermione, both of them would have been dead from all the 'adventures' they have been into.
In the fourth book, it was Hermione who helped Harry the most to prepare for the Tri-wizard tournament. In the fifth book, Hermione tried to make Harry reasonable and return to his senses by trying to explain to him that Sirius can't be in the Ministry of Magic [though she failed in this]. It was also Hermione who keeps on reminding Harry to focus on his occlumency [which he did not also do]. The last two books showed Hermione's importance in the group as she has always been the one who analyzes things carefully before plunging into a decision.
And who could forget her sacrifice in the last book? She modified her parents memory and made them forget about her so she could help Harry in finding the Hocruxes. Without Hermione, Harry will never be able to find all of it or even survive the Death Eaters. She was tortured by Bellatrix Lestrange when they were both captured in the forest of Dean.
Of the three main characters in the book, Hermione is the most sensible.
Aian's rating: five stars.
...there's more to come...=)
