No, this is not about the TV Series "Heroes and Villains", I just borrowed the title because I can't find any other words to describe my post.=)
Last night I posted about my love for books and how it started, or at least almost like that. Now, allow me to introduce you to my all time favorite characters and why I love them. But before that, let's meet the villains first.
1. Pennywise the Clown-- Ever since I've read Stephen King's "IT", I had develop a fear of clowns and balloons and that is thanks to Pennywise. Just imagine a dancing clown with a bloody-red mouth that forms into a sinister grin, with a hideous orange pompom, carrying balloons and has the aura of pure evil. A sinister shape-shifter also known as manitou (or boggart in HP) who takes the form of anything that scares you but would often take the form of Pennywise to lure unsuspecting children.
So, that's it. Whenever I see a clown (or even just ROnald McDonald) or balloons of any shape and sizes, I am instantly reminded of Pennywise. Silly right? I mean, I am already 20 years old but I'm still scared of a purely fictional character who, I often imagine, would suddenly crawl out of the toilet bowl and eat me.
2. Eva Galli or Alma Mobley (and all other forms she takes)- Like Pennywise, Eva Galli is also a manitou who took it upon herself to terrorize the Chowder Society, a group of men who loves to tell ghost stories (or something like that). She's the evil character in the book, Ghost Story by Peter Straub, a truly remarkable read though quite lengthy like IT. I haven't read the book again since the first time I've read it (though I have the habit of rereading my books just for the fun of it) because I don't have the courage to be scared again. LOLS.
Forgive me for being really shallow people but you know how your mind works when you are reading. Your imagination is more active when you are reading, or I say, my imagination is. When I read I concentrate hard and sometiemes find myself transported to the story itself. Its like, I am not just the reader but actually a part of the story so taht when it is really scary, I am scared out of my wits.
What makes this Eva Galli scary is that, it can't die and it takes forms of people both alive and dead and seemed to enjoy scaring people so much.
Maybe someday I'm going to read the book again.=)
3. Lasher- the Taltos. Born all-knowing. A walking baby. The evil familiar of the Mayfair witches. Lasher is far from scary but his character is quite intriguing. A spirit with no recollection of who or what he was before he was called by the simpleton, Suzanne Mayfair. He was passed from Suzanne (burned for being a witch), to Deborah (daughter of Suzanne and the first one to control Lasher), to *Charlotte, to Jeanne Louise, to Angelique, to *Marie Claudette, to Katharine, to *Mary Beth, to Stella, to Antha, to Deirdre and to *Rowan Mayfair like an heirloom.
What makes Lasher stand out in my mind is that, though he did do numerous dispicable things, Lasher symbolizes a man who doesn't know himself. He seemed lost and only wants to find out who he is, like a child he stumbles and commit mistakes which had eventually cost him his life. Lasher's character made me realize that sometimes people doesn't really want to be bad, its just that they don't know that what they are doing is wrong. Sometimes people just doesn't really know what they can do and what they can't, they do not know who they are that in their attempt to find themselves they make mistakes or does things that are often misinterpreted by the people around them.
(*strongest witches of the family. For more info please read The Tales of the Mayfair Witches by Anne Rice. Its a trilogy; Witching Hour, Lasher, Taltos)
4. Lord Voldemort- Yes, Voldy can sometimes be thought provoking. A classic villain with superiority complex so advance that he could imagine himself conquering death. You know what you can learn from Voldy?
* Do not underestimate your enemies.
* Don't take things at face value.
* Verify first before you react.
* Know weaknesses as well as your strengths.
* 'wag masyadong feeler!
AND NOW WE GO TO MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE CHARACTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1. The Vampire Lestat- Yes, the Brat Prince himself. The most handsome blood drinker ever created. Cunning, articulate, mysterious and enigmatic. A Vampire whose dream in life is to become a Saint (read-Vampire Chronicles: The Blood Canticle). An immortal feeding on the blood of the wicked. Extravagant, childish, temperamental, rule-breaker and outrageously vain.
I'm sorry but I just have to stop here or I could go on for hours and this whole blog is not enough for everything I have to say for the Vampire Lestat. FOr more info on the Vampire Lestat please read the Vampire Chronicles (composed of ten books all written by Anne Rice).
2. Dr. Hannibal Lecter-(Silence of the Lambs, etc) the cannibal psychiatrist who killed and cooked his patients when gets tired of them. I think Lecter is amazingly intelligent and aside from his penchant for human flesh, I think you could actually call him sane. Hell, I think he is even saner than some of those people in congress.
3. Dr. Ian Malcom- the pessimistic mathematician in Micheal Chrichton's Jurrasic Park. Remember the man constantly wearing black in the Jurrasic Park movie? He wasn't much emphasized in the movie but Malcolm is one of the most important character in the JP and its sequel The Lost World.
The way he relates mathematics (or at least his equations and the Chaos theory) with real life almost made me like math. Almost, but not really. I just love the way he explains things and the way his mind works. But most of all, I love the way he attracts the T-Rex. I think the T-Rex can't get enough of him too because he was injured by it (though two different T-REx's) in both the JP and TLW.
4. Hermione Granger- yes, probably the strongest character in the HP book aside from Dumbledore. Without Hermione, Harry will not survive any of his adventures since Ron also have the habit of attracting danger just like Harry. Both Harry and Ron are actually impulsive when it comes to their actions and Hermione is always the one with the sense to stop them just in time. If Harry would listen to everything Hermione tells him then he would have saved himself from all the unwanted dangers he has to face (e.g the prophesy fiasco).
5. Luna Lovegood- charming and likable. She may be weird but Luna's character is really something. The light of the HP5. A charming girl who would believe anything and everything even without proof. I don't really know why I like Luna, but may be its because of her openness and the way she says things without a need to blush. I like her more than I like Ginny.
I've read a lot of books in my life but as of this moment, only these characters stands out in my mind. Of course there are others who did entertained me and taught me quite well, Agatha Christie's Miss Marple for example, but I guess these characters are some of the few that will stay in my memory for a very long time.
