It started with Goldilocks and Dr.Seuss

I grew up in a family that values reading more than anything else. I grew up in the shadows of my writer grandfather who never fails to encourage me to read, my parents who spend most of their free time reading and my uncles and aunts who likewise does the same. Needless to say, I had always been surrounded by book lovers and so I think, it is no longer surprising if I grew up this way.

I grew up with my nose buried and my eyes glued to all kinds of books. I started reading at the age of two with the first book I had ever read, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Then I gobbled all books by Dr. Seuss; The Cat in the Hat, Where is my mother, Mr. Brown and so on. As years passed I progressed to Cinderella, Snow White, Rumplestiltskin and all the other fairy tales ever created. I journeyed through the woods with Red Riding Hood; ran with Alice in her wonderland, journeyed with Tom and Huckleberry, and solved mysteries with Nancy Drew and the Hardy boys. And like many children in the world, I had fallen in love with the National Geographic and the Reader's Digest.

I think I could confidently say that I had been reading both the National Geographic and the Reader's Digest even before I had learned the multiplication table or knew what nouns and pronouns are.

All my life I had always been surrounded by books and people who adores them. I grew up not only a book lover but an addict with no hope of recovery. In my twenty years of existence, I had spent 18 long and enjoyable years in a love affair that I had always treasured.

Books had always been my companion, my friends. It never fails to make me laugh when I am down, touch my heart when others can't, make me cry and challenge my mind. I guess I will not be what I am now without the books I had grown to love.

I read anything and everything I could get my hands on. Magazines, encyclopedia, textbooks, novels, self-help books, and yes, even the dictionary. Anything as long as it can be read.

Of topics, I am particularly interested in History (World, English, and military), Archeology, Arts, Mystery, Science Fiction and Culture. Maybe that is why I once found myself deciding that someday I am going to marry the National Geographic (and I mean, the magazine itself not anybody from the NG).

For me, books are something sacred. I always find it offensive to see people tearing and burning books without considering the knowledge they could get from its pages. I always think that there is no such things as a useless book, the usefulness of books depends on your preference.

I had learned to love books so much that one of my greatest dreams in life is to build a library greater than the Library of Alexandria.

Whenever my birthday comes or Christmas or any occasion where you expect people to give you something, I always pray that somebody would give me a book but most of the time people would choose to give me something that I can't even use. I remembered very well that only three people has given me a book as either a birthday gift or a Christmas gift and I am most thankful for them for dong so.

I think people just don't understand that I am not really particular with the price of their gifts and that I value books more than anything else, though of course I wouldn't say no if you choose to give me a laptop or digital camera instead. Just give me a book and you will forever be remembered.

For 18 years now, I have nurtured my love affair with books and I think the relationship is getting stronger. People come and go in my life but my books will always be with me and I have no plans of exchanging them for something else.
