When you don't have anything better to say, keep silent.
When you know that what you are going to say could hurt other people's feelings, or is not sure if it could offend or not, keep silent.
I think one of the golden rules for a peaceful life is KEEP SILENT.
Sometimes we say things that could offend others, whether we mean it or not. Sometimes we don't really mean it and therefore we could be absolved of the guilt. But there are times when we know fully well that what we are saying or is meant to say could hurt or offend others. We still do it rationalizing that we are given the 'freedom' to express ourselves in a way we want.
We defend what we do. We defend what we say. We keep on saying its somebody else fault. We keep on saying that we did not mean to offend. But it actually doesn't matter if you mean to offend or not. The fact remains that you have offended somebody.
Does saying "I didn't mean it!" change the fact that the person was hurt?
Look at it this way, if you have accidentally killed a person, say in a vehicular accident. You did not mean to kill the person but that doesn't mean that you are not guilty of the crime. You still killed the person and whether you mean it or not, the person remains dead.
I think its time that we start zipping our mouths from time to time. Before you say something, ask yourself first, "How would I feel if I am the one being called horrible names?" or "Would I want the same things spoken to me?"
There is a need for us to zip our mouths. There is a need for me to zip my mouth.
Be sensitive. You're not the only human being in this world.
