To live and to die

"Many that live deserves to die and many that faces death deserves to live." (Gandalf Gray, LOTR, The Fellowship of the Ring)

They say that the good die young while the evil dies at a ripe old age. But why so? Why not let the evil die first and the good enjoy the rest of life? Wouldn't the world be a better place if the good is left in it?

Sometimes I think that the good dies first because God doesn't want them to suffer in this world, they are too good for it. Or maybe they die first because they had already fulfilled their missions on earth and so God wanted them back in heaven. And maybe, just maybe, God wants the bad to suffer for all the things they did on earth. No good things will be left unrewarded as they say, and so no bad things will go unpunished also.

But there are also times when I think its unfair for the good men to die young. Aside from the fact that they are young and has the potential to make things right for this world, bad men are multiplying while the good is diminishing. What will happen if all the good men dies? I don't even want to imagine it.

What a loss for this nation to see its youth dying in the hands of her own people. Filipinos killing Filipinos without once thinking that though their beliefs and religion may differ, they are of the same race. To see one side fall is to see this country sl0wly falling into pieces. The downfall of one side is not the victory of the other but the downfall of the Filipino nation. It is only by working together, setting aside all differences, that this country will survive.

But will it ever be possible? Will the young and the good stop dying?

Sometimes I ask myself, don't this people feel any remorse when they kill they fellowmen? They are humans after-all and therefore has some form of conscience in them--conscience, after-all, is one of the few things that sets humans apart from beasts.

Don't they ever feel bad to see someone so young, bleed to death from the wounds that they have caused?

The good die young. A lot of them are already dead for one cause or another. And do they deserve to die? We can never tell. Maybe they do and maybe they don't. But one thing is certain, they are gone and as their number dwindles so does hope for this nation to be whole again.

They lived. They fought. They died.
