Jigoku Shoujo

" oh pitiful shadow bound in darkness,
looking down upon others and causing them pain.
a soul drowned in sinful karma,
want to try dying this once?"
--Enma Ai, Jigoku Shoujo

Jigoku Shoujo or Hell Girl, a japanese anime, is about a girl, a website and a whole lot of people with too much grudges in their heart and no room for forgiveness.

As the story goes, if you want to take revenge on someone there is this website called Hell Correspondence where you can type the name of the person you want to curse and the Hell Girl (Enma Ai) and her three companions will take care of it. The website only appears at midnight and only to those people who really have strong grudges in their hearts. The Hell Girl can choose to accept or decline your request and if she accepts, you will receive a text message indicating that she accepted the request. She will then show herself to you, a child dressed in a school uniform, and will give you a straw doll. If you want to take revenge, you pull the string and enter a binding contract with the Hell Girl. You see, there is a catch to this. You don't think you can just curse people to hell and live happily ever after right? After the revenge is granted and the person you cursed is ferried by the Hell Girl to hell, a seal will appear in your chest and you are doomed to wander in hell for all eternity when you die.

As morbid and as depressing that sounds, it's a good anime. It is actually more like a collection of stories of the people who requested Ai's service. Although I do not agree to the theme that much, I like the anime because it shows real life situations that are sometimes so desperate that you can't blame the person for using the Hell Correspondence. Some reasons are shallow and some seemed valid enough. I think that is the beauty of it. It makes you realize that people can sometimes be so shallow that they would want a person dead for something so trivial, something that can still be resolved if only they would let their mind take control instead of their hearts.

Watching this anime makes me evaluate myself and the things I believe in. I hold grudges but I don't think I can hold a grudge strong enough to wish someone ferried to hell in exchange for my soul. Seeing the shallowness of some of the reasons people access the website makes me thankful that Hell Correspondence does not exist and Jigoku Shoujo is only an anime and a myth.

Can you imagine what life would be like if getting rid of someone is as easy as that? Everyones life is at the tip of someone else's fingers. Just piss someone enough and you get ferried to hell. It will be a world without a room for forgiveness. A lot of undeserving people can be sent to hell simply because someone hates them so much. I wonder, how many people do you think would type the president's name on that site? This will really be popular among politicians, gangs and broken-hearted teenaged girls.

Can you imagine all those souls doomed to go to hell without any hope of redemption? Although I must admit some people really deserve to be sent to hell but, can you do it at the expense of your own soul?

Well, it's really good this thing is not real. I really can't imagine what the crime rate will be like if it's easy as this. Anyway, if you like animes and haven't watched this one yet, you may be interested to check it out. Here's the website---> Jigoku Shoujo. You may also watch this anime at AnimeFreak.tv.
