Emperor's with new clothes

I was again standing in front of the mirror, trying to make my hair look presentable when another thought came into my mind. [ibang klaseng mirror tlaga oh!]

I remembered the tale of the Emperor's new clothes. Remember? The emperor who was so vain and want everybody to admire him. He hired some people to make this supposedly new clothes which only the wisest could see. In the end, he paraded in front of his people without anything on.

I just realized that we, the people today, are like modern day emperors with new clothes. We want people to admire us, we want to be the best, we want to have the best. Well, there is nothing wrong with that. That is human nature.

However, the problem with us is that, we forget ourselves already in our attempt to be with the crowd. We tend to follow the latest fads, wear the latest in fashion, and look as 'in' as we could. And like the emperor's advisers we praise the things we don't even believe in because we don't want to be uncool. And of course, like the emperor we wear these clothes even if we know that we look funny to the rest of the people. We do this just to be IN.

But is it important?
Is it important that we wear the latest? Is it important that we have the latest?

I think I agree with Shakespeare when, in Hamlet, he said, "To thine self, be true." Wouldn't it be better if we would remain true to ourselves instead of submitting to something that we could not afford? Wouldn't it be better if we would remain ourselves instead of being somebody who looks like an outcast in our garments?
