Malayo pa ang Valentines pero titira na ako

"Love is not lost, if not reciprocated it will flow back and purify the heart."

It was a long time ago when I first came across this quote and I could not even remember who said it. All I remembered was that, I was an incoming freshman high school student and the quotation was shown to me during the interview. I was asked to explain it and I can't remember how I explained it, only that I passed and was able to enroll in one of the toughest secondary schools in the Philippines.

That was the one and only time I saw that quote but it has always been at the back of my mind and has the uncanny tendency to resurface when I least expect it. Oftentimes I would be bothered because I do not really understand it. I know it speaks of unrequited love but I do not understand the flowing back and purifying the heart part. In a way, I could only assume. I could only give my presumption on it because love has always been a topic that I don't want to discuss. I always find it more confusing that mathematics.

So, why am I talking about this now? Why am I suddenly quoting this line if it is a topic I am not keen to talk about?

Maybe because I had always been challenged by the things I cannot understand. Even until today, I am still harboring the tinniest of hope that someday I would become a mathematician. And like math, I am challenged by an idea as intangible as the air.

This is how I understand the quote.

In the literal sense, Love, like the air, is infinite and could therefore not diminish. Like energy, love is not created nor could it be destroyed. It could be change and transfer but it is never lost. One form of love could be change into another and so on.

Love is a very varied thing. It is an idea that, like the earth, is constantly changing. It was never constant. I think the definition of love depends on the person. Love is not only between two people. Love is not only platonic.

Love does not only mean physical attraction, and I think it is never physical attraction. Love could be anything. I don't know. I really don't know how to explain it.

What I only want to say is that, when we are under intense pain we grow, we learn. It is the most painful experiences that teaches us the greatest lessons. Like a diamond created by intense pressure, we are made stronger by intense pain.

They say unrequited love is painful as it is dangerous. And every unrequited love we give teaches us to appreciate those who gives us the kind of love that others could not give us. Every pain brought to us by the feeling teaches us lessons on humility, sacrifice and selflessness.

So, I think who ever said that line was right. Love is never lost.
